TEACHING

Having a curious mind and a thirst for knowledge are two things that should be more celebrated. One of the best things about the teaching projects that you will be joining on your GIA trip, is that they will help you to understand what a privilege it is to have access to free and guaranteed education until at least the age of 18. Children in many countries around the world are often forced into work because of family need, thereby missing out on vital schooling. Or they are simply not allowed to attend because of their gender. And yet education is often the only way for people to find their way out of poverty, to be able to build a career and sustainable future for them and their families. In order to prevent the cycle of poverty and lack of opportunity repeating itself therefore, it is vital that all children have access to education.

Teaching is considered a rewarding job because of the impact you have on a child’s life. As a volunteer teacher, you're crafting not just lessons but life-altering possibilities for those who need them most.

On your GIA trips you could find yourself teaching English in Nepal, Vietnam, Costa Rica, Italy, India, Sri Lanka, Guatemala and Argentina, to name a few of our voluntary teaching project placements. But it’s not just teaching English. In Guatemala for example, people need marketing skills and IT assistance to be able to sell their wares online and make a good income for their families. They need to be given the tools so that they can build their businesses, and you can make a huge difference in very little time. Or in Fiji, a country blighted by issues such as Type II diabetes, you could find yourself involved in teaching healthcare and sports which can help in improving people’s physical well-being.

Children in many countries of the world are incredibly grateful for the chance to learn and on your GIA trip you will truly make a difference by teaching such children. Not only will you be able to teach them English, sports and other subjects, you will be teaching them about other cultures too. You’ll provide different perspectives on life and ways of thinking, and much as you will teach and they will learn, it is equally true that the reverse will happen too.
